The Strategy and Tactics of Pricing, Thomas Nagle & Reed Holden, Prentice Hall, 1995, 409 pages; approx. $40.
If you are trying to design your service program offerings and are looking for guidance on pricing, this a good textbook to get under your belt. The authors describe different pricing strategies (cost-plus driven, competition driven, customer driven, and value based), making the argument through example and through math for value based pricing as the best way to maximize profitability. They also cover: pricing in the marketing mix, the psychology of pricing, life cycle pricing, pricing for different market segments, and how to measure price sensitivity. The book does not, unfortunately, have many examples from service industries, but the logic is readily applicable.
